Coming off the disaster on the Monongahela , Jacob Murray and his young friend Joshua return to Fort Cumberland under the command of George Washington. The defeated British army soon withdraws further east, leaving the frontier virtually undefended.
With the frontier left unprotected, Delaware raiding parties begin striking the settlers in an effort to clear their lands of the English. Jacob and Joshua lead a company of militia deep into the French-held Pennsylvania frontier. They plan to build a fort that will not only give the local settlers peace of mind and added protection, but serve as a ‘home base’ from which they can continue the search for Jacob’s wife Maggie and Joshua’s best friend One-Ear.
Though the raids seem to lessen with the presence of the well-constructed fort, the Delaware have not withdrawn completely. A rescue mission soon turns out disastrous when the men are ambushed and Jacob is taken prisoner by chief Tewea, the dangerous warrior nicknamed Captain Jacobs.
Help often comes from unexpected sources, and the Murrays soon find themselves face to face with ghosts from the past and a mysterious band of sentinels that are keeping watch over the Pennsylvania forests.

Not often is the French and Indian War written about in historical fiction, and this series fills that gap. I have enjoyed following Jacob and Maggie as they struggle as pioneers, captives, Rangers and journey seemingly endless throughout the American frontier.Just as you begin to hope that their hardships are ended, a new threat looms!
I feel the characters are realistic, and keep hoping that the family can be reunited!
Famous people like George Washington make an appearance during a recounting if Braddocks defeat, and equally interesting, though not do famous, Robert Rogers, head of a company of frontiersmen called Rangers who serve as scouts and guides.
Looking forward to more in this series!!

Great read! you will want to buy them all once you start.
I read the first two books within a few days and couldn't put them down. I was very excited when I came across this one a couple days ago. There were a few more surprises in this one and I'm anxiously awaiting the next in the series!
I am enjoying this series and it was nice to get this as fast as I did
This is the 3rd book in The Gaunlet Runner Series. The entire series is a very good read, and as a whole I would give it 5 stars. Unlike the other books, I found myself thinking, "just get to the end already," the 2nd half of the book seemed to drag near the end. Don't let this stop you, this series was a very refreshing read. So many books ignore what they feel are mundane details, these don't, I could experience the mosquitos, the mud, the cold, the knotty rooted trails, and savor the sparse food, all the while experiencing the suspense-filled apprehension of how life would have been during this time period. Jacob is a little bit too modern of a man, but this can be forgiven as there is only so much empathy one can muster from 250 years ago. Fantastic effort.
This is the third in an excellent series which pulls the reader into the era of the French and Indian War. Plenty of action, romance and gritty historical truth. I enjoy the period and anticipated further adventure. I highly recommend this series and this book. The author has clearly done his homework and the book is filled with historical detail on weapons, frontier life and the struggle for defense of their homes. The Native-American experience is also recounted with the truth of being caught between two white people taking their lands and destroying their way of life. Enjoy this book.
Better than the second volume. The format of alternating chapters changes somewhat as the circumstances of the main characters changes. The history of the French and Indian remains excellent. The author could put more effort into the personal interactions of the characters. At one point Maggie is upset stating that Jacob is not doing his duty to her. There is no further mention or discussion of the issue. Later in the book it is stated that they had a good winter together.
The volume ends with Maggie in jeopardy again.
