I was expecting yet another Civil War book when I ordered this, but I found the range and variety of chapters and subjects to be really interesting. Personalities like Miegs are buried in history, his contributions were awesome, the tales of the man in the box when Lincoln was shot, Washington, DC before the war and how it changed, all things that I found very interesting. If you are at all in history, and particularly the Civil War, this is a very enjoyable read.Product details

Civil War Stories A 150th Anniversary Collection (Audible Audio Edition) The Washington Post Kevin Pariseau Audible Studios Books Reviews
Truly amazing! The Washington Posthas done a remarkable job copilating such stories. Should be mandated reading in our school systems.
Simply put, I learned a great deal from this book. A college education never put me in the middle (and on both sides, most interestingly) of this tragic American war.
I don't consider myself an expert but think I know quite a bit and this book kept me glued to it day after day. I only have time to read in the mornings and at night so had to read it a little at a time. Lots of GREAT information, altho I wish there was more information for first timers with this type of book because I'm not even sure I closed the book out right.
this book so far. It appears to be a compilation of stories that have appeared in the Post concerning the civil war. Some are contemporary, some are from that period. Since I am a self described civil war junkie I have enjoyed it so far because I have learned a few new things about the civil war that I did not know before.
I have read much on the Civil War, but found this collection of short stories most intriguing and learned a lot of things for the first time. Easy to skip around in if you want to and just as easy to read from "cover" to "cover". I think this would be a good choice both for someone knowledgeable in the era as well as newcomers. Enjoy!
While "buffs" may find many of these essays too basic and lacking new information, the serious reader of history will enjoy the variety and we'll-written pieces that cover a wide spectrum of topics. Perfect reading for those who are traveling by plane or train and want manageable bites of information and those wanting something brief before bedtime. If you want scholarly fare or battleground narratives heavy on military minutiae, these essays are not for you. If you want to understand the tone and texture of Civil War America, you will enjoy these pieces put together by some of the Post's most literate writers.
Good survey; Repetitive in parts. The focus is almost entirely on Washington, D.C. And Virginia area which is understandable but neglects other parts of the country and their connections to the war. In particular for example they could have written about Beaufort and Port Royal South Carolina which was controlled by Union forces from late 1861 and inhabited by businessmen from New York and Boston who engaged in active commerce throughout the entire war.
The 1st South Carolina Volunteers at Beaufort composed entirely of former slaves, was the first all black unit of the Union Army in the Civil War. The former slaves were abandoned by their owners fleeing from the Union Army invaders.
