Staying in Vegas Vegas Morellis #1 edition by Sam Mariano Romance eBooks Reviews

I'm not usually one for love triangles, but I really enjoyed this one - very well done. Laurel's a great heroine - young, but plucky and smart. She says at one point that she'd do a better job than the mob capo at running Sin City and I couldn't help but agree with her.
Sin lives up to his name a mob enforcer and dominant, there's a bit of kidnapping (although Laurel doesn't try very hard to get away) and a bit of Stockholme Syndrome, but it's pretty clear, pretty fast that Laurel and Sin have something special. Despite the intensity, it's a long, slow burn, which despite the lack of actual sex was quite satisfying to read.
There were some things I could have done without all of the main characters are ridiculously beautiful (do men really think of women having chocolate curls? I kind of doubt it), there's not a lot of sense of setting since most of the story takes place inside, there's a little too much angst and introspection out of Rafe in particular, Laurel is so smart and funny sometimes (the duck discussion had me crying laughing) that I kind of felt neither guy deserved her, and the characters have nothing in common other than their hotness (and hots for each other), but those were small niggles in comparison to the cliff-hanger.
The cliff-hanger annoyed the hell out of me. I'm sick of cliff-hangers and wish I'd waited until all three books were out. Maybe that's a sign that I was invested in these characters and rooting for their HEA, but I was really, really annoyed when I hit the end. Hopefully the next two books will make up for it!
Sam, Sam, Sam……. I can’t help myself, but I love your twisted brain.
Once again you had me wrapped up in a story full of surprises and more than once you had Rafe and me thinking

"What. The. F***. Is. Going. On?"

Vegas Morellis is Sam Marianos new series, and it’s a spinoff from her Morelli series. It can be read without reading The Morelli series first, but strongly suggest you dive into that series first.

Staying in Vegas is not for the pure-hearted, die-hard romantics. It has so many twists and turns that at some points I ended up questioning my sanity. And I had no idea what was up and what was down. But with Sam Mariano as my captain, I know she will steer the ship safely through the storm and give me all the deliciously wicked love I can take.

“Kidnapping is essentially one of the stages of courtship in this family,” he says, like I’m overreacting. “Nothing to get all upset about.”

Rafe Morelli and Laurel Price had a short love affair some time ago, and circumstances drive Laurel to see him again. But Rafe is nothing like she remembers and she leaves him as quickly as she can. What she doesn’t count on, though, is Rafe’s enforcer Sin, who has entirely other plans with the young woman.

"You want sweet tempers and brotherly love? Join a church, not the Morelli family."

This first book in the new series is a study into the minds of Laurel and Rafe, with the mysterious Christian “Sin” Sinclair on the side. It draws an excellent picture of Rafe and Laurel’s characters and it gives me the feeling that I’m in for another brilliant, epic tale from Sam Mariano.

The sexual tension is burning hot and I feel like I sit on the edge of the seat throughout most of the book. With Sam Mariano’s understanding of delayed gratification and slow-burning sexual tension for both her heroine and her readers, this is the sweetest torture.

Thanks to Sam Mariano for this amazing advanced copy.
I did not read the previous books in this series. The description said it was not necessary in order to enjoy this trilogy. The only character I liked was Sin. Laurel was an immature 19 year old. Judging by the reviews I would have liked Rafe if I had read the previous series however I did not find anything attractive in him. In fairness to the author I will say I hate love triangles. If you like those types of stories you might enjoy this one. I thought I might enjoy the original series but after reading the reviews they also contain love triangles.
If you read the full blurb, you know that this is the first book in a new series which is a spinoff of a previous series by this author (this book is also the first of a planned trilogy and not a standalone). As this was a new-to-me author, I hadn't read the previous series first; while the author does a pretty good job of making this separate--and I certainly enjoyed reading it that way--there were a lot of references to characters and events in those previous books. Enough references in fact that I feel for optimal enjoyment, those books should be read first.

I like the surprise baby trope--something about two people forced to get along and maybe finding something together that they wouldn't have otherwise just appeals to me. Add in a little bit of good girl/bad boy and the blurb had me hooked.

I really liked Laurel; she's young, but she's intelligent, and I felt she made reasonable decisions based on her situation. Not that her heart didn't get her to take some leaps pure reason would have argued against, but that just made her character seem more realistic. Certainly Rafe's initial reaction wasn't unexpected but that was pretty much the last time I was able to predict where this story was going. After that, the author took me on an emotional roller coaster ride that I still haven't recovered from. Most of the time, I wasn't exactly sure what I even WANTED to happen!

Take interesting characters, tons of chemistry and a dry humor I really enjoyed, add in a plot that had me all twisted around and a gut-wrenching ending, and it all adds up to one heck of a 5 star ride. Can't wait for the next book, and I will be going back to read that earlier series.
