In this second book in the series, we learn more about Mercy as she starts to remember a little more about herself. It has a very different feel to the first book, which had a mystery to solve. Now we start to get a better understanding of Mercy's past. There are new characters to enjoy, and Lim builds the tension and a sense of impending doom. Yet again, we are left wanting more...bring on Muse!
I love this series for its original compelling plot and strong characters. There are so many elements to it, and I just love that you don't know what to expect (other than that Mercy, in the long run, will do some awesome stuff).

I particularly like it as the larger ethereal plot-line builds whilst a bunch of interesting and funny stuff happens on earth - I am bored of obvious novels and wanted more. Lim gives that to me in spades.
There's something formulaic about this series Mercy "wakes" in a body not her own, and quickly has to figure out who she's meant to be and why. She has a run-in with Luc and the Circle of Eight, then leaves her latest host. Still, it's a formula that works, so even though EXILE feels much like MERCY, it still strikes a chord.

Mercy doesn't have a strong enough personality, so readers are more likely to remember the other characters. Justine is a dancer, a survivor who needs Mercy's help. Sulaiman is a cafe chef who may be closer to holiness than Mercy herself. Franklin's life is so believable it hurts, while Ranald is a petty beeyatch who needs to grow up.

A great way to spend a day.

In 2011, I picked up a random book from Netgalley and was blown away by its enthralling story that kept me on the edge of my seat. That book of course was Mercy in its American release (originally from Australia). Naturally I eagerly awaited the release of the rest of the books in the series and we finally reach book 2 with the pending release of Exile.

Although it has been two years, I still anticipated this sequel and loving it as much. Did I think it would matter that I didn't remember that much from book one? No, because it was fairly self-contained and not much was revealed about the overarching story mythology. That is what I figured book two would divulge.

And Exile does follow through on that promise, revealing more about Mercy's past as some kind of angel although the specifics are still murky. In fact, I feel like I learned about as much from the goodreads summary as I did from the whole book. But whereas book one has Mercy caught up in a kidnapping situation, this book has her occupying the body of a young woman whose mother is battling cancer. Very sad, yes, but not as suspenseful or gripping.

I think some very interesting questions around faith, responsibility, and free will are raised in this book but I found them choppily interwoven with some chapters following Mercy's body while some chapters dove in to those questions through her dreams. They were not tied together very strongly. Add to that, the lackluster plot and I was less impressed with this second book, somewhat breaking my streak of strong second books so far this year. But I am still intrigued by the promise of this series and I do want to check out book three Muse as well as what looks like the fourth book Fury. If you are interested, I would definitely say read Mercy first before reading Exile. I can't imagine getting a hang on Exile without having had the background of Mercy.
This time when Mercy awakens as Lela, a waitress in a dingy cafe in Melbourne Australia with a terminally ill mother. Luc comes to Mercy in a dream telling her that he will be able to find her through Ryan. While waiting for Ryan’s arrival, Mercy finds herself longing to be with him more and more while growing confused about her feelings for Luc. As Mercy finds herself remembering more, she is becoming more determined to learn the truth of who she is and who to believe.

Because of the complexity of the plot of this series, you really must read Mercy before delving into Exile. With that being said, what a great continuation of Mercy’s story! The backdrop of Exile feels much different than Mercy. Carmen’s life was pretty ordinary. A teenage girl surrounded by snobby teen girls, while Lela’s life is very depressing. Mercy was also a little more action packed with the mystery surrounding Lauren’s disappearance, while Exile is more about the growth of Mercy’s internal struggles and the more romantic development of her relationship with Ryan. I find Mercy’s love interest with Ryan refreshing. Where most YA romances are quick and superficial, Ryan and Mercy were based on friendship first.
I love how Lim knows just how much to reveal about Mercy making the reader desperate to continue to search for the truth of her. Mercy never wakes up and just remembers everything. Her strength and knowledge are directly linked. When one grows, so does the other. This gradual progressions keeps me wanting more!
